During Sports and Functional Physio’s first year of rehabilitating athletes for their injuries, it wasn’t uncommon for athletes to request they stay with us for ongoing gym and performance programming, even after their injury was completely healed and rehabilitated. Not long after that, we started receiving requests from non-injured athletes who were looking to improve their performance on the field, on the court, in the water, on the bike, or even in the ring.
Hence, our Athlete Performance Program (APP) was born.
This was designed to provide our athletes with individualized, evidence based and measurable performance programs to guarantee improvements in their sporting endeavors. In physio circles, it’s not uncommon to hear “How can you program well for an injured athlete if you can’t program well for a non-injured athlete”
And it’s true. Our understanding of what an athlete must return to after injury, allows us to effectively to program for athletes well beyond their injury rehab. So why not provide that as a service for our athletes? A performance program that is highly individualized that you complete with your physio in person, for as many days of the week as you need, around other like-minded athletes in a state of the art gym.
Performance testing
Our performance testing is highly objective, measuring athletes progress every step of the way. In our humble opinion, this is unmatched by any performance testing in Queensland. Why? Our testing apparatus: Keiser and VALD Our location within the Powerhouse Gym Performance and Recovery Centre allows us access to “Keiser” equipment, which uses pneumatic air compression as resistance. This allows us to accurately measure your power output (in watts) with every repetition, therefore we can be highly specific with your programming and ensures that you are actually progressing!
In addition, our VALD testing apparatus helps to further ensure we know exactly where your strengths and weaknesses lie, further allowing for specificity with your gym programming and ensuring progression!
We perform your initial testing in week 1, then repeat testing every 5 weeks to ensure we’re not just guessing with your progressions! We don’t take credit for our performance testing and programming abilities. We are copy cats. We learn from the best in the field, those at the highest level of sports performance, not only in Australia but from around the world, and we implement it here at Sports and Functional. We do that because it works. High performance teams and athletes around the world are advised by the best in coaching, as well as informed by researchers who are in the trenches finding out what works and what doesn’t. Why not copy them and implement that for our athletes?
Their methods are always changing, research is always evolving, therefore we change our methods and evolve our performance testing with them. So if you’re an athlete under Sports and Functional Physio, rest assured that we aren’t just guessing, or making stuff up as we go, we’re implementing the strategies from the highest level of sports and athletic performance with our athletes
Sprint Training
Technique is also a huge aspect of sports performance, particularly running, sprinting and change of direction technique. As part of our APP, we assess key variables when it comes to running and change of direction. How fast you run, accelerate and change direction can be a huge determinant of your sporting performance. As part of our assessment we look at your acceleration (how quick you are off the mark), your sprinting (aka max velocity) and your change of direction technique to determine which areas we need to work on most throughout your programming. Running and change of direction based drills become a significant part of your program, (dependent upon your needs and goals) which we implement both on and off the field.
Keep in mind, this may not apply to your sporting needs at all! A cyclist, or a boxer, or a triathlete doesn’t need to focus on acceleration technique. We have multiple streams of our athlete performance program, whether it’s our field based athletes, water based, court based, combat athletes etc etc, we specify your assessment and programming to your chosen sport.
Training
You train WITH us, in the brand new Powerhouse Performance and Recovery Centre as MANY times a week as you need, all for one fixed fee.
At Sports and Functional, we are located within the state of the art Powerhouse Performance and Recovery Centre in the Westfield Shopping Centre Mount Gravatt. This facility redefines the concept of “gym” and takes things to an entirely new level. From the highest quality of gym equipment imported from Italy, England and the US, we have the broadest selection of equipment of any gym in Queensland. Combine that with our recovery pools, cold plunges and saunas, this is your one stop shop for all your sports and performance needs.
There will always be a Physio on the floor guiding you through your program to ensure perfect execution and progression. You will have access to our programming app, “teambuildr”, which diligently tracks every rep and set. At the end of every 5 week block, we look at your numbers and also re-test your performance measures to further inform the next 5 week block!
As mentioned, running and change of direction technique is a huge determinant of your sports performance, hence we have a strong focus on these aspects of performance throughout your programming. For athletes in our other streams, such as combat or water based athletes, running acceleration technique obviously isn’t indicated, hence we shift our focus to technique development specific to those sports.
Our field sessions are also a part of our APP. This is where we take our field athletes outside the gym on a weekly basis and put them through our field drills. What’s the point of making a bucket load of progress in the gym if we can’t transfer that to the field. On the field, we can really look at your velocity and acceleration mechanics for running and cutting to optimize your performance. Again, this is of no extra charge and is a part of our performance program. Attend as many field sessions as you need with us to maximize your performance!

We also diligently track our athletes “load” both inside and outside the gym through our programming app. This ensures that we are not overloading (or under loading) our athletes. This is particularly important during the season, especially for our youth athletes. It’s not uncommon for our athletes to have huge loads during the week. School sport, club sport, rep squads etc - we work around your sporting endeavors to ensure loading is optimal to mitigate your injury risk and prevent burnout! This works the other way too, whereby the offseason is a perfect chance to ramp up your load and improve your performance. Our load tracking allows us to identify whether your load could be higher so we can push you that extra bit further!
